A Family Tradition – From The Lehigh Valley To The Whitehouse

Purchasing a Jaindl turkey for Thanksgiving has been a part of family traditions for generations. The family-owned Orefield, PA turkey farm take pride in Jaindl turkeys’ starring role at many Thanksgiving dinner tables.

“We send two turkeys to the White House for Thanksgiving every year,” says Joanna Jaindl Keichel, retail manager. “We send them in a special wrapping that reads ‘Happy Holidays Mr. President.’ The turkeys are handpicked right off the line by my father, David Jaindl, and no different from our other turkeys.”

“The Jaindl turkeys served at the White House represent the National Turkey Federation and we are proud of that.” Cathy Jaindl adds, “We started providing the turkeys for the White House dinner as far back as Eisenhower.”

Cathy’s brother, David Jaindl, is the current owner of Jaindl Farms and she speaks with pride of his dedication to the company. Jaindl has been a family company from its very beginning in 1935 with the family working together to provide the best in Turkeys and turkey products to the Valley. “I don’t know any other way of life,” says Cathy. “It’s hard for me to imagine not working with family. This is in our blood.” Today, David Jaindl and his wife Jackie run the business alongside David’s sister Cathy, his 5 children, son-in-law, and nephew.

Jaindl Farms has a season Retail Store on Coffeetown Road in Orefield, where customers can purchase Jaindl product at a ‘first come, first serve’ basis. The store offers fresh whole turkeys, smoked turkeys, turkey breasts, turkey bbq, turkey jerky, turkey burgers, and of course, A-Treat soda, another Lehigh Valley family tradition that was acquired and revitalized by Jaindl a few years ago.

You can find their extended holiday hours on their website. Jaindl also offers gift cards that can be redeemed in the store. “The gift cards are a great holiday gift for friends, family, and local businesses to hand out to their employees. The cards never expire,” says Joanna. If interested in purchasing Gift Cards, call the farm office at 610-395-3333 and ask for Joanna.

Jaindl turkeys can also be purchased at grocery stores like Wegmans, Whole Foods, and Giant to name just a few. Dawn Carlon and Heather George, long-time Jaindl employees, handle all large wholesale orders and Cathy Jaindl, Joanna Jaindl Keichel, and Erica Gamble handle all small wholesale orders. Jaindl ships turkeys anywhere continental USA through mail-order. If interested, they accept orders through their wholesale department at wholesale@jaindl.com or 610-395-3333.

The Jaindl family is pleased to continue the traditions started by patriarch Fred Jaindl over 80 years ago with just 5 turkeys and now has grown to raising over 800,000 turkeys per year. “It is very rewarding to be a part of local family’s traditions during the holidays and throughout the year,” says Joanna. “We work hard every day to continue the local legacy my Grandfather started.”
