Bill and Mary Ellen Ford began planning to open their own pet store in 2001. Mary Ellen had been a veterinary technician for 10 years and Bill worked for a pet food distributor, so running a pet-centered business seemed a natural progression to feed their LOVE of animals. In May of 2006, they opened AfFORDable Pet Center near the iconic Roxy Theater.
The Ford family still LOVES helping customers keep their pets happy and healthy. Their son and store manager Mike and their two Labrador Retrievers, Maya and Savannah are all part of the family business
Mary Ellen enjoys passing on her product and animal knowledge to student workers. Some, from Lehigh Valley Intermediate Unit, come to learn job skills such as stocking shelves and customer service. “Most of our staff are part-time young adults from the high school and college who work evenings and Saturdays. “Because we are independent, we are not limited like the big box pet stores. We can special order from the distributor when our customer needs a particular product,” Mary Ellen said.
AfFORDable Pet Center has a dog trainer available regularly, and they welcome pets to come and shop with their humans. Whether you need to take your bearded dragon or puppy for a walk, their staff will help with harness or jacket fitting. In addition to pet supplies, they also have hamsters, guinea pigs, small birds, and pond supplies for sale, and they support local rescues with donations for finding homes for kittens.
